How to request a custody schedule change

A short, factual way to ask your co-parent for a swap or a permanent change, with message templates you can copy and a checker that flags anything likely to backfire.

Questa guida è al momento disponibile in inglese.

The message that gets a yes

A request for a swap succeeds or fails on four things: what you are asking for, when, why in one line, and by when you need an answer. Everything else, especially anything about last time, lowers your chances.

One-off swap

Hi. I have a work event on Saturday 26 April. Could we swap so I have the kids on Sunday 27 instead of Saturday? I can do the usual 5pm drop-off. Could you let me know by Wednesday? Thanks.

Read that again and notice what is missing: no history, no "you always", no explanation of how important the work event is. It states the request, offers something in return, and gives a deadline.

Check your draft before you send it

Paste your own message below. The checker highlights anything likely to get a defensive reply and gives you a calmer version that keeps every practical point.

Templates for the common cases

Asking for a permanent change

I'd like to propose a change to the schedule from Monday 1 September. My working pattern is changing, and I'd be able to do Mondays and Tuesdays every week instead of alternating. I've put the proposed calendar here: [link]. Could you take a look and tell me what works and what doesn't? I'd like to agree it by the end of the month so we can both plan.

Following up when there is no reply

Just following up on my message from Tuesday about swapping the weekend of 26 April. I need to confirm with work by Friday. Could you let me know either way?

Saying no to a swap

Thanks for asking. I can't do the 26th because we already have plans that weekend. I could offer the following weekend, 3 May, if that helps.

Saying yes

Yes, that works. So you'll have them Sunday 27 instead of Saturday 26, with drop-off at 5pm as usual. I'll update the calendar.

The rules behind the templates

  • One request per message. If you have two things to ask, send two messages. Mixed requests get half-answered.
  • Dates, not days. "Next weekend" causes more confusion than any other phrase in co-parenting.
  • Offer something. A swap, a later drop-off, a lift. It changes the question from "will you do this for me" to "does this arrangement work".
  • Put the deadline in the message. It is not pushy; it is how the other person knows the request is real.
  • Leave out the reason for the reason. "I have a work event" is enough. Why the event matters is your business.

Keep the record

Whatever the answer, it is worth having the request and the reply in one place with dates on them. Not to win anything, but so that neither of you has to remember what was agreed. In PeaceParent, a swap is a request with an approve or decline button, and the calendar updates itself when it is approved.

Domande frequenti

How much notice should I give for a swap?
As much as you can. A week is reasonable for a one-off. For a permanent change, expect a conversation rather than a single message, and offer a start date a few weeks out.
What if my co-parent never replies?
Ask for a reply by a specific date in the message itself. If it passes, send one short reminder that repeats the request and the date. Keep both messages; a clear record helps if the pattern continues.
