The 2-2-5-5 custody schedule

Fixed weekdays with each parent plus alternating five-night weekends. Who it suits, how it compares with 2-2-3, and a calendar to try it.

Tämä opas on tällä hetkellä saatavilla englanniksi.

Fixed weekdays, alternating long weekends

In a 2-2-5-5 schedule, Monday and Tuesday are always with one parent, Wednesday and Thursday always with the other, and the Friday-to-Sunday weekend alternates. Because the weekend attaches to whichever fixed days come next, each parent ends up with a five-night stretch every other week.

Why families choose it

  • Predictability. The same activities fall on the same parent every week. Swimming is always at one home; the Thursday club always at the other.
  • Fewer handovers than 2-2-3. Four a fortnight instead of six.
  • A proper stretch with each parent. Five nights is long enough for a routine to settle, without the full seven of alternating weeks.
  • It works with fixed shifts. If one parent always works late on Mondays, give the other Monday and Tuesday.

Many families start on 2-2-3 and move to 2-2-5-5 when the child starts school. The weekday split stays the same, so the change is small in practice.

Holidays and exceptions

Half-terms and summer break the rhythm anyway, so most parents set holiday rules that override the pattern for those weeks and let it resume afterwards. Christmas is usually alternated year by year. The generator lets you add each of these as a rule, then shows the resulting calendar so you can check it before you send it.

Sending it to your co-parent

The link under the calendar contains the pattern, the start date and any holiday rules, and nothing else. Your co-parent can open it, view it with their own colours, adjust it and send a revised version back. Once you agree, PeaceParent keeps the same schedule in sync on both phones and handles swap requests with a clear yes or no.

Usein kysyttyä

What is the difference between 2-2-5-5 and 2-2-3?
Both are 50/50 over two weeks. In 2-2-5-5 the weekdays are fixed (Monday and Tuesday always with one parent, Wednesday and Thursday with the other) and the weekends are five nights long. In 2-2-3 everything shifts each week.
Why do people choose fixed weekdays?
Predictability. Swimming is always at Mum's, homework club always at Dad's. Children and schools find it easier to remember.
